Description

Ctenanthe burle-marxii 'Amagris' is a prayer plant variety known as the Fishbone Plant, prized for its pale grey-green oval leaves with dark green stripes, deep purple undersides, and upward leaf movement at night; it thrives in bright, indirect light and consistently moist, well-draining soil, requiring high humidity, warm temperatures (60-80°F), and minimal fertilizer, making it a relatively forgiving but beautiful tropical houseplant.

History

Named for famed Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, known for discovering and promoting Brazil's flora, with 'Amagris' itself being a naturally occurring mutation discovered and propagated through tissue culture since around 2000,

Key Characteristics

  • Foliage: Pale green leaves with distinct dark green, curving stripes, resembling fishbones, and vibrant purple undersides.
  • Growth Habit: Slow-growing, low-spreading, with stems that have a purple tint.
  • Nyctinastic Movement: Leaves fold upwards at night, a characteristic trait of prayer plants.
  • Common Names: Fishbone Plant, Never Never Plant, Prayer Plant.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; avoid direct sun to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy; allow the top inch to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity; misting, pebble trays, or humidifiers are beneficial.
  • Soil: Well-draining, rich potting mix (e.g., standard potting soil with perlite or coco coir).
  • Temperature: Warm environments, ideally 60-80°F (15-27°C). Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring/summer).
